He's big, he lives in the sky and he watches over many people, animals, places and things... meet Frank, once an ordinary family man with a fairly ordinary job, until one day he woke up and was floating high above his home.
By putting the phrase "big guy in the sky", into (my opinion of) a literal meaning, I began to develop a character that was stuck in the sky and for some reason was overly large.
Possible back story for the character:
Frank was the balloon operator/designer in a party store where he worked closely with helium. He had passion for what he considered his art and he would spend days and nights experimenting with various elements, from balloon designs, decorations layouts to what gases went into the balloons. - Not sure what but an experiment or just the general over-exposure to these gases has led to his floating and over-sized figure.
He is an easy going, gentle guy, who loves his wife, two kids and his pet parrot - in order to spend time with Frank, his family would have to visit him in the sky. The size of his torso could possible provide space for a picnic. His pet parrot could also be his sidekick or his floating companion.
Obstacles, conflicts and possible scenarios:
- At first he would have to deal with being in the sky and not being able to control his movements
- (Part of back story) He would have to deal with the authorities/ police/air-force etc. They could attempt to bring him back down but the only option would be for him to remain up there.
- The authorities could provide him with food by bringing it to him by helicopter. This could also be a factor as to why he remains big or constantly grows (lack of movement and constant feeding.
- Simple things such as birds or weather could prove an issue. Then there are planes, tall buildings, mountains and so on that could be physically challenging to overcome.
- What if he found himself floating into a restricted air space, e.g over an army base. At first he would be conflicted on how to not float into that space and then there is the issue once he does float over it of dealing with being shot down.
- The fact that he cannot control his floating movements could place him in numerous places providing plenty of conflicts and scenarios
- If somehow he remains within the city (maybe he is tethered down) he could help solve crimes from above.
I'm being very vague and broad at the moment, so many possibilities so setting boundaries will be necessary.
